10 Cool Things to Look at Under a Microscope

Our kids got a new AmScope Compound Microscope for Christmas and it has opened up a whole new world of exploration. We were immediately on the search for cool things to look at under a microscope.

Fortunately, there were lots of good resources around to help us get started. Here are a couple of lists that gave us some great recommendations.

Since we were visiting the grandparents in Maryland, the kids were able to get some water samples from the Chesapeake Bay and we able to see some cool creatures swimming around. We were even able to catch a few on video.

This is a timely gift for our family. Our 11 year old is taking a Life Science class and many of the concepts can be a little boring for kids without seeing. Since they are using compound microscopes in his class, I loved seeing how confident he already felt with using it. I think it is going to be a great tool for the bug project he has coming up for this semester.

Interested in getting a microscope for your family? We’re very happy with the AmScope M150C. It has been very easy to use out of the box and is very solidly built. We used a cell phone to capture pictures and videos through the lens, but AmScope also offers some models with a USB camera built in.

[Update 12/4/20]: Andostar was kind enough to send us one of their digital microscopes with a built in camera and display screen. It is only a 200X microscope as opposed to our 1000x AmScope, but it is definitely well priced and super fun to use.
